Introduction to NIFT - National Institute of Fashion Technology
National Institute of Fashion Technology was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It has emerged as the premier Institute of Design, Management and Technology, developing professionals for taking up leadership positions in fashion business in the emerging global scenario.
The Institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion business education in the country through network of eight professionally managed centres at New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhina-gar, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Raebareli. NIFT programmes are re¬structured to suit the changing business context and it is expecting to get the status of Deemed to be University.
The new curriculum aims at providing University Education in a 10+2+4 pattern, which is consonant with global professional education systems. The new multi-disciplinary curriculum also aims to deliver skill oriented and broad based education, integrating it with IT and modern industry practices for an all round development of future fashion professionals. NIFT now offers 4 years - undergraduate and 2 years -postgraduate programmes in the areas of Design, Management and Technology. The eligibility criteria differs depending upon the courses. .
The candidates applying for Bachelor of Fashion Technology (Fashion Design / Leather Design / Accessory Design / Textile Design / Knitwear Design / Com¬munication Design) programme will be administered with General Ability Test (GAT) and Creative Ability Test (CAT) for the written entrance examination
The General Ability Test will comprise of various sub-tests ie. Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability and Business Domain Test. The Creative ability Test is administered to judge the skill, power of observation, innovation and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the candidate's usage of colour and illustration. Shortlisted candidates from the written entrance examination are required to undergo a Situation Test which is a hands-on test to evaluate the candidate's skills for material handling and innovative ability on a given situation with a given set of materials.
The candidates applying for Bachelor of Fashion Technology (Apparel Production) programme will be administered with General Ability Test (GAT) and Managerial Ability Test (MAT) for the written entrance examination. General Ability test will comprise of various sub tests inlclude Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability and General Knowledge & Current Affairs. Managerial ability Test is a test to judge the managerial effectiveness and inter¬personal skills of the candidates. This test comprises a case study, Business Domain Test and Logical Ability.
